2000s: The dark side of South London and the second in the chilling Jack Caffery series.
A quiet residential street in South London.
But not for long as this is South London seen through the eyes of Mo Hayder. And it’s in one of the streets here that a husband and wife are discovered bound and beaten in their home. Close to death and their young son missing.
Detective Inspector Jack Caffery is called in to investigate, but the similarities with events in his own past make it impossible for him to view this new crime dispassionately.
Little does he know that more disturbing revelations about both his past and his present are to come and that the real nightmare is only just beginning …
Brixton South London
Of all the things that Jack Caffery witnessed in Brixton that night, it was the crows that jarred him the most. The crows bother him with their petrol soaked feathers and making DI Jack Caffery’s hairs on the back of his neck stand up.
And so we enter Brockwell Park which for all intents and purposes is a rather nice and peaceful park in the real world, but this is Mo Hayder’s Brockwell Park….
Brockwell park – a huge thrown-together isoceles of forest and grass with its apex at Herne Hill Station rambles for over a mile along the boundary of two very different parts of South london.
To the West- the badlands of Brixton where council workers have to drop sand on the streets to soak up the blood
To the East – Dulwich with its flower drenched almshouses
Hayder’s sense of South London creates quite a unique view of the city – this is certainly Mo Hayders South London and a criminal and deadly atmosphere pervades every one of its streets. It;s the meeting of worlds and the meeting of social classes.
Once you’ve read this and are in need of some therapy we recommend you stop by the Lido Art Deco cafe on the edge of the park and have a strong cup of tea – heck no maybe a strong beer to put your view of this park back in to reality.
