1876: So much sass and sexiness in one book!
Minnie Ward, a feisty scriptwriter for the Variety Palace Music Hall, is devastated when her best friend is found brutally murdered. She enlists the help of private detective Albert Easterbrook to help her find justice. Together they navigate London, from its high-class clubs to its murky underbelly. But as the bodies pile up, they must rely on one another if they’re going to track down the killer – and make it out alive . . .
London
Oh come to this London! It’s one of showgirls, theatres, cafes just off The Strand and a walk in Hyde Park.
Glorious detail of 1876 in London but also the grime behind the glitz of the showgirls and the many plays and magic shows that take place in theatres along this street. Covent Garden and the surrounding area is featured to show the detail and complexity of life here.
Behind the scenes in the theatre is a joy to see but also we see the fear and the hard work of the girls who perform in these places. A story of an MP in Kensington shows a nice but sad contrast to life in London and the theatre world at that time.
Lord Leighton’s house at 12 Holland Park Road inspired the novel
Sambourne House, 18 Stafford Terrace, Kensington also inspired the novel
