High in the Blue Ridge Mountains, The Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls is a refuge of privilege in a land devastated by the Depression.
When Thea Atwell’s arrives late during the summer season, her arrival causes quite a stir – why has she come here now? why was she late? Who is she? Rumours and gossip spread as you might expect but even the worst and most made up rumour might not come even close to what really happened before she joined the camp.
If only the other girls knew..
A riding camp for girls both sounds like a dream and nightmare all in one – a riding camp in north carolina is the best bit – riding horses and looking after them and being at one with nature etc. but a camp for girls – not sure that is our cup of tea but then it does seem to be more american like a summer camp idea which is good to read about since we’ve never heard of one on a ranch before.
Blowing Rock is where the camp is located and yes it is a real place. what a name so we want to go there all the more now – ‘concealed in the Blue Ridge mountains’ .
The camp was an eye opener to us but a lovely atmosphere around the horses and how the girls tend to them, ride them and the atmosphere – the smells, the fresh country smells and the soft hair of the horses are all evoked to revive all of your senses. If you have ever ridden bare back in the desert this is SO the book to recapture those feelings.
And of course the depression is in the background throughout the novel
