South Africa and Apartheid
Cape Town certainly has it problems and they are shown and explored in the novel. “The trouble with this country,” someone says is that “everyone wants to complain, nobody wants to do anything, nobody wants to forget the past.” And people do complain about the state of the streets, the amount of traffic congestion and the red tape that seems to be so fixed onto everything that it constricts and strangles everything in its path.
The biggest problem however is the constant racial tension between the various ethnic groups in the city. Afrikaans, English, Indians, Xhosa and Zulu. The smattering of Afrikaans in the novel adds to setting the scene and carving out the culture of this varied and fascinating city and country.
