2000s: She hasn’t seen her brother in years. Now, he’s dead.
When Judi Westerholme finds out her estranged brother has been murdered, she assumes it’s connected to his long term drug addiction. Returning home, she is shocked to discover he had been clean for years, had a wife – now missing – a child and led a respectable life. But if he had turned his life around, why was he killed in a drug deal shooting? And where is his wife?
Desperate to know what really happened, Judi sets out to uncover the truth, even though it means confronting her own traumatic past. But she’s not the only one looking for answers.
The settings are background to the family dramas being played out in the story. We shift from one suburb to another, from one street to the next tracing family stories, family history and more.
Southbank
Southbank is the area of town where most of the drama unfolds. Southbank used to be an industrial area in South Melbourne. From the 1990s onwards, it has been regenerated into a densely populated district of high rise apartment and office buildings and is now the business area of the city.
Highpoint Shopping Centre
This seems like fun as it’s described as ‘a maze’ when one character goes there.
Candlebark – the fictional part of town where the novel is set. There is a Candlepark in the city of Melbourne though!
