Richard is a divorced father of two. One weekend his two children are staying with him and following a seemingly happy BBQ, they wake up to find their father dead in his be. The circumstances surrounding his death are rather suspicious and there’s a lot more than meets the eye. There’s also a ex-wife in the background, a best friend and someone who has gone to extraordinary lengths to keep a secret. An explosive secret.
From the respectable and quiet area of Gipsy Hill in London, the police state that this is not the kind of area they are usually called out to. Only the previous evening a family barbecue seemed to go well. A family man with a respectable life or one who liked to put on the appearance that he had. With a Richard’s voice detailing some of his thoughts and insights into his life leading up to his death, the picture starts to form.
With the victim dead early on, the journey into the family dynamics begins. A family in the loosest sense of the term, an ex-wife living in Penge. DS Jane Bennett and DI Mike Lockyer are called in to investigate – a marriage, the setting of happiness thrown into the spotlight and the way in which people are never what they seem.
