2000s:DI Joe Faraday, Portsmouth’s hope to end the violence
Portsmouth is a city on the ropes, a poor, dirty but spirited city, with a soaring crime rate. And it is home for DI Joe Faraday.
Now Emma Maloney’s dad has gone missing. Faraday thinks he may have been murdered. But these days, a hunch is not enough. Faraday’s squad of detectives are battling with an ever-growing caseload of a city torn by violence, poverty, drug-dealing and petty crime. Who can spare the time and resources for an investigation unsupported by hard evidence?
Joe Faraday is struggling with his own demons, and finding Stuart Maloney, dead or alive, develops into a battle not simply for justice, but for sanity.
If DC Faraday ever gets a day off, there’s plenty to do in Portsmouth that doesn’t involve fighting crime. It’s a unique city since it’s both a port city and naval base. Plenty of maritime heritage and lots of activity down at the docks….
The nice kind of activity is based on the maritime history of the city – the interactive National Museum of the Royal Navy and the wooden warship HMS Victory, where Nelson died in the Battle of Trafalgar can be seen.
Faraday’s first floor studio looks east over the gleaming expanse of Langstone Harbour.
“This morning the tide was on the ebb, sluicing out between the tall wooden posts that marked the navigable channels, and on either side, busy amongst the stranded boats of local fisherman, were the birds that feasted on the rich harvest from these glistening mud flats.”
Cathy loves to go sailing or water-sking with her husband here. There’s also a very nice beach!
A nice area of the city and an excellent viewpoint not just if you’re a policeman and want a bird’s eye view of the city!
It’s a chalk ridge that overlooks Portsmouth and provides a stunning viewpoint over the city, the harbours and over to the Isle of Wight.
