Two babies are born. Brothers in all but blood.
Paulus and Otto are brothers, the twin sons of devoted and happy parents Frieda Stengel, a doctor, and her musician husband Wolfgang. The blood doesn’t matter to anyone apart from when it does on one night This is because on the same night that the boys are born, the National Socialist German Workers Party is also born, and this bodes bad for many including Frieda and Wolfgang who are Jewish.
This is the story of their growing up and growing apart, of their family, their friends and their country. Germany, as it slides into Nazi Armageddon..
This is the story of two Jewish boys and the Jewish people during Germany’s horror. The position of Jewish people in Germany at this time becomes very precarious very quickly.
1930s Berlin is a scary and chilling place – society is crumbling and people are having to resort to all kinds of things to try and survive. Jews are being persecuted as the country’s leaders become forces of evil.
Berlin is like a huge painting in the novel Dorien Gray – as the days pass, it becomes uglier and uglier with colours merged and faded, faces of the people evil and contorted, Germany itself melting into a horrible black mess. Whilst on the outside everything is in sharper contrast – the bravado and hedonism of those in charge compared to the courage and survival of the population
