Escape to a new life in Triento with Nicky Pellegrino
We’ve all probably done it at some point – wanted to escape our existence from our little lives and head over to a new country and start over? Well that’s just what Stella does when sadly her boss dies and so suddenly her 25 year old career at a legendary fashion house doesn’t mean what it used to.
She feels lost as she sorts out through the office things and so when she stumbles across a house swap website, she gives it a go and moves over to Triento in Italy for a while.
But she doesn’t just love the house, she loves the lifestyle of the person whose house she’s now it. As she looks around the house for clues as to the person’s identity, she takes on more and more of her new Italian persona
But can an idea of someone ever match up to the reality?
Stella likes living in Camden at first – there’s the eclectic mix of people on the streets, the mishmash of brightly coloured buildings, the quirky cafes and the fact that is more raw and rugged than other parts of London. Who else could described Camden with such panache and vibrancy in so few words than Nicky Pelligrino?
From Camden to Triento ( fictional but inspired by the author’s love of Southern Italy and especially Maratea where there is statue as in the book) the link is made via emails via cyberspace and her growing love for Triento, Villa Rosa and everything about it. How a location can seize you before you have even been there!
Triento is changing too however as Leo as a landscape gardener bemoans the fact that in people in Italy are living life indoors now instead of in the outside. He creates gardens to draw people outside and together. Bliss!
Nicky is your ideal guide to Triento in Italy. She paints a picture of watercolours and aromas:
“The villa stood with its back to the mountains and glowed pale pink in the setting sun.” There’s a small green lizard disappearing into a crack in the wall and the wide expanse of blue ceiling above. The house itself contains a fresco of the world outside. Exquiste
Leo is the ideal absent guest – he’s made her a scrap book of hints and tips as to what to see and do and how best to enjoy your time at his humble abode. This is the perfect guide – following in his footsteps and great recommendations for tours and trips and everything in between.
Stella is also introduced kicking and screaming (no not really) to new restaurants and cafes in the lovely cobbled town. As well as the scent of the flowers and the hot sun on the stone streets, there’s the aroma of great Italian food in the air. There’s creamy coffees, vanilla pastries and more than one too many recipes to mention. Take too long reading this book though and you may well put on five pounds or so.
