2000s: Naval historian Dr Douglas Spalding is found dead in Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard
When naval historian Dr Douglas Spalding is found dead in Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard, the Major Crime Team is adamant it is suicide. Detective Inspector Horton is not so sure. Then another body is found in similar circumstances and Horton is convinced they’re looking at murder; but not so his bosses. Angry and frustrated at the lack of investigation, Horton goes out on a limb to prove he’s right. Whichever way he turns, he finds the deaths have all the hallmarks of a cover up at the highest level, but who is behind it and why? Soon Horton begins to find disturbing similarities with his own private investigations into the disappearance of his mother thirty years ago. As he gets closer to the truth though someone is determined to prevent it from ever coming out, even if means death.
Set against the visually strong, unique, vibrant, diverse and atmospheric backdrop of the sea in the Solent area of Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight on the South Coast of England. Horton’s investigations take him across the Solent and into the harbours of Langstone and Chichester and its surrounding coastal towns.
This is where the main character lives. On the threshold of the Solent -it’s the most relaxed atmosphere along the Portsmouth coast apparently. Maybe not for Horton, but it’s his escape from his gruesome cases.
It is well known in real life for being a hideaway from the busy cruising grounds of the Solent in general
Head round Eastney Peninsula and within 15 minutes you are in the Solent, ready for day trips to the Isle of Wight or further afield.
Langstone Harbour offers more a more sheltered retreat.
