Travel Guide

Cunnanan’s trail of murder

This is the trail of a serial killer – of the man who killed the fashion designer Gianni Versace as well as many other men on a killing spree which took him from San Francisco, Minneapolis, Chicago and just outside Philadelphia before heading to Miami where he shot Gianni Versace on the stairs of his mansion.

The mansion is now a restaurant and hotel . Gianni would walk from his home here to collect the newspapers and magazines from Italy. It was just along here where Andrew Cunnanan stayed in a motel whilst waiting for the perfect opportunity to carry out his crime.

The killing spree started with

Cunanan’s killing spree began in Minneapolis on April 27, 1997, with the murder of his close friend Jeffrey Trail, a former US Navy officer . He was murdrered in a loft apartment belonging to architect David Madson.

Madson, who had once been Cunanan’s lover, was his second murder victim; his body was found on the east shore of Rush Lake near Rush City, Minnesota, on May 3, 1997.

Cunanan next drove to Chicago and killed 72-year-old Lee Miglin, a prominent real estate developer, on May 4, 1997.

Five days later, Cunanan, who had taken Miglin’s car, found his fourth victim in Pennsville, New Jersey, at Finn’s Point National Cemetery. Cunanan shot and killed 45-year-old caretaker William Reese.

Cunnan stole Reese’s truck and headed to Miami Beach, Florida, where he stayed for some time before committing his fifth and final murder – that of Gianni Versace.

The focus of this book is however not so much Gianni but the world Andrew lived in – the world of drugs, gay clubs, gay sex, the gay scene of the 1990s and the dull shine of the beauty/fashion industry, the gleam of wealth that attracted people like Cunnanan
