1942: Wartime is affecting each and every one of the girls at Liberty’s
Flo Canning’s heart is beyond repair following the news that she has been dreading since the outbreak of war. As Flo throws herself into the role of fabric manager at Liberty’s, old and new friends alike help pull her from a whirl of despair.
Between work and home life there’s plenty to keep Flo occupied. Not least new deputy store manager, Henry Masters, whose arrival has consequences that Flo and her workmates could never have foreseen.
But there is more tragedy still to come, and Flo and her friends will need each other more than ever if they are to survive the uncertainty ahead.
Arthur Lasenby Liberty founded the store back in 1874 with a £2,000 loan from his future father-in-law, and he accepted the lease of half a shop at 218a Regent Street with three staff members.
The shop opened in 1875 selling items from Japan and the East. He soon grew the company and bought up the second half of 218 Regent Street followed by more buildings. They moved into the present day Tudor revival building which was constructed from the timbers of two ships: HMS Impregnable (formerly HMS Howe) and HMS Hindustan. The front of the shop on Great Marlborough Street is the same length as the Hindustan. It is a Grade II* listed building.
‘The kindness they have all shown in allowing me to take liberty with Liberty’s and create my own fictional wonderland is something I will be forever grateful for’
