Sarah Richardson is 11 when she moves to Vancouver Island with her family.Her Father has a job there studying killer whales and whilst he is at work, she makes friends with a young girl called Goldie Dixon, who is a Nootka Indian. two children from very different cultures playing together in all innocence just as it should be.
But what Sarah doesn’t know is that before she moved there something happened to Goldie and her family that no one talks about. Yet the story of the two families and cultures coming together – especially wise old Nana, Goldie’s Granny. There’s lot of stories and tie ins to the title – a whale figurine is important – mixing folklore fishing and some of the most magnificent creatures on earth.
The Nootka are an American Indian group located mainly on Vancouver Island . Goldie Dixon in the novel grows up and is part of this culture.
Sarah Richardson is 11 when she moves to Bamfield, Vancouver Island with her family.Her Father has a job there studying killer whales . Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre could be where he works or deals with in some way.
