The story of William Shakespeare begins with his birth on April 23, 1564. He was born to a Catholic family in a time when Queen Mary I of England was doing her best to convince the entire country to support the Catholic Church. But when Shakespeare turned 4 years old, a new Queen sat down on her throne – and under her rule Catholics (include Shakespeare’s parents) would be treated very differently. You may know the name William Shakespeare, but perhaps you’ve wondered, “What’s so great about him?”
Travel to the theatre where many of these plays are performed. It’s quite a thrill just to stand outside and see the theatre imagining that you are back in Shakespeare’s Day.
Any Shakespeare fan has to visit the town where he lived and worked. Many of the houses here are exactly like how they would have looked in Shakespeare’s Day and as you wander around you can really sense Shakespeare’s legacy in many ways. His house where he was born is a fascinating museum with many things children can easily understand. Just standing in the rooms and looking out the windows, with the creaky wooden floorboards beneath gives you quite a sense of how old and special this house is.
Further down the road is his wife’s house – Anne Hathaway – set in beautiful gardens with flowers as you would imagine it would have looked with its thatched roof, back when she lived here.
