Lexi falls in love with Hollingsworth House – a crumbling old Georgian mansion in Yorkshire – and despite everyone including her husband thinking and saying she is mad, she knows there is something about that house she has to discover.
She decides to explore the grounds and she soon comes across an old diary. As she reads, she meets Allie between its pages – an Australian nurse working in France during the First World War.
Obsessed with finding out more about Allie and Hollingsworth House, her marriage crumbles. But all Allie can think about is the house and the nurse. What she doesn’t know yet is how the two are connected…
There is sadly no Hollingsworth house but there are a few homes into the area where you can pretend to find your own secrets of the past:
“Such a peaceful setting – quiet and beautiful No -one would guess that hundreds of miles from here, men were killing each other – again.
Allie worked in the hospital which looked after those fighting on the front line of the Somme.
“Years later it was deemed that the Battle of the Somme was a failure ” but Allie worked some twelve hours shifts here and sees the horrors and the honour that the men still carry when they seem to have lost everything else. The sights she sees stay with her for life.
