From this novel you get to see that NewYork was a chaotic but multicultural city in the 1980s with the music, food and graffiti iof the time dripping from every page. The two youngster from different sides of the track use New York as their forbidden playground – who would have thought Trump towers or Central Park might be places Elise from New Haven would end up? Jamey is Yale material but he finds a new outlet here and a chance for him and Elise to be together away from the confines of expectation and duty.
They end up living in a East Village apartment and spend the time not really seeing a great deal of the city, but more of the walls of the bedroom. However, the spirit of the city is that anyone can be anyone here, you can do what you what and have the time of your life, be the star of your own story – whatever the ending might be.
