Books set at sea this Travel Tuesday
There’s a bit of theme in books at the moment. Set at sea or with a strong watery presence. So a guide is in order since it’s summer, there’s a sad lack of water in the air at the moment in most places around the UK so reading one of these books may just bring the much needed rain or at least some cool relief!
Take a splash in the sea and find some sparkling sea pebbles
Beyond the Sea – Miranda Dickinson
You know the stones you find at the beach? The ones where you think they’re pebbles only to find that they’re small pieces of glass shaped by the sea? That’s the magical starting point for a lovely story by Miranda Dickinson in Somewhere Beyond the Sea….and if you’re not singing that song by the start of chapter two, then what’s wrong with you?
Meet the sealwomen of Icelandic Folklore
The SealWoman’s Gift – Sally Magnusson
THIS is one fascinating read. Based on true facts and devling into the history and culture of Iceland back in 1600s is a work of excellence. It’s one of the Zoe Ball picks for her book club on ITV and quite rightly so.Sally Magnusson has family and ancestry of Iceland so this is a very personal story and the connections to the author makes it all the more fascinating. Even the cover is a work of art.
Stay in a summer house on a small island just off the Finnish coast..
The Summer House by Philip Teir
If you’ve ever travelled around Scandinavia and seen those little wooden huts where many people have summer homes? I’ve sailed past many myself on the way to an island or two and wondered what goes on inside. Well, this book tells you that and more! And it’s quite an experience. Not exactly an escape though for the family concerned. Sit back and peep through those curtains….
Take the ferry from Stockholm to Finland…if you dare!
Blood Cruise by Mats Strandberg
A cruise that in real life is very popular and very calming. Not in this book it’s not! There’s more than just regular passengers on board. Mats is known as the Swedish Steven King so you can kind of imagine the shocks in store. Brave if you read this whilst on any kind of boat to be honest.
Happy Sailing/Swimming/Walking on the beach
