Books to Read at Halloween

You want to read a book that has some darkness in it for Halloween. Something spooky or just uncomfortable and slightly chilling. It will enhance those nights leading up to October 31 when All Hallows Eve is upom us.

The Palace of Shadows – Ray Celestin

This is where you want to spend Halloween. A creepy house that is huge and the owner wants to build even more rooms and corridors even though she and only a few staff live there. There is something living in a glass cage in one room. Outside on the moors, the noises and shadows circle with intent…

The Lost Ones – Anita Frank

This is still one of the most chilling books I have read. It’s not what happens – although that is creepy enough – it’s the waiting or expectation that something is going to happen that is really chilling.

The large house, the creaky stairs, the wailing of a child that is not there….you really need to read this at Halloween or anytime when it’s dark outside.

Hazardous Spirits – Anbara Salem

This is the perfect Halloween read. Dark streets of Edinburgh lead you to several buildings where the Spiritualist Movement are at work. There are readings, seances, and all manner of chilling things going on.

A man claims to be able to hear the voice of the dead but his wife doesn’t believe him. Trouble is, others do and people are starting to talk….

My Cousin Rachel – Daphne Du Maurier

This is a very creepy read and the woman named Rachel arrives at her new home dressed in black with a lace veil. She’s married the rich owner of the hall who’s just died. His cousin who currently lives in the house is very suspicious and its the way the two characters seem to float around the empty house that is really chilling. Who is Rachel?

The Only One Left – Riley Sager

This is very creepy. Imagine spending your days in a remote house on the cliffs. The rough sea hitting the rocks below you. You are there to look after a woman who everyone thinks is the sole survivor of a family murder. Maybe she was the one who did it? She types out the story with one hand on a typewriter. The house is dark and remote. There is no way out.
