Books set in the world of magic

These are some of the most immersive and magical books you will read. Imagine being part of a circus, a theatre play,  a performance of some kind…..can you smell the greasepaint, the popcorn and can you hear the excitement?

There are some magical novels being written this year and that adds to the ones already out there, just waiting to be chosen and magicked out of that bookshop and into your home.

Ever fancy going to a circus, a freak show, a world of illusion and more? Well, your luck is in…..

The Square of Sevens Laura Shepherd-Robinson

The Square of Sevens – set in a world of card games

The wonderful locations of a novel which captures the magic and mystery of the art of telling fortunes with playing cards. The Square of Sevens is real and based on a fantastic history of the magic arts which were once seen as the dark arts.

Enter the immersive locations here such as the parlours, the inns and the dark corners of some travelling caravan where we meet those who deal in this mysterious cartomancy.

The Fascination Essie FoxThe Fascination – set in a fairground

Roll up, roll up. We’re in 1889 Victorian England. A world of rural fairgrounds and glamorous London theatres.

The London in this novel is one of circus fairs, curiosities and anatomical musuems. The fascination with people who were different, seen as ‘freaks’ in some way, was huge. The novel explores this by visiting various country fairs and  the theatres of Drury Lane. Wait until you enter the Hell Fire Clubs…..

The Illusions Liz HyderThe Illusions of moving pictures

The author says that the overlap between moving pictures and magicians is much bigger and more complex that in her novel.  The truth seemed to be that magicians played a crucial part in developing the language of film. Their sheer inventiveness, bloody mindedness, rivalry, secredy, rethlessness, and extraordinary egos contrasted with extreme acts of generosity , creativitity and collaboration. This is largely inspired by real life and it’s fascinating!

The Circus Train Amita ParikhThe Circus Train -a travelling circus

A circus on a train that tranverses Europe? Yes please. The train starts off in one city and heads to Paris, Seville, there are stops all over the place but the train never stops long in one place for long.

The train sounds wonderful and there are ballrooms, bedrooms and kitchens that sound amazing. When the train stops, there are adventures to be had. But behind the glamour and travelling there are dangers…

The Circus Train conspiracy by Edward MarstonAnother circus train

A great series this one all about trains in one way or another. This time we see the Moscardi Circus travelling by train to Newcastle for their next show. Yet a collision on the track with a couple of sleepers causes pandemonium: passengers thrown about and animals escaping into the night.  Then a body of a woman is discovered in nearby woodland,….
