A journey to remember on the Titanic

On the day in 1912, the Titanic hit an iceberg in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. It was 12.40pm ship’s time and it took around 2 hours 40 minutes for the huge ocean liner to sink to the bottom of the ocean with a devastating loss of life.

Reading about this disaster and the human stories to come from it have fascinated people ever since. Recently I’ve read a few novels where those human stories have come to the fore. There are lots of fiction books where the Titanic is a major part of the story, but a few where the human side of the tragedy is particularly examined.

The Girl Who Came Home -Hazel Gaynor

This is very poignantly inspired by a true story of a group of people who travelled together on the Titanic. Hazel has based this novel on a true story of the Addergoole Fourteen, a group of men and women from County Mayo, Ireland  and woven it into a tale of realistic heartbreak and human perseverance. There’s the build up and excitement of going on the ship and the consequences of that fateful night. The human bond between characters and the group’s hopes and dreams of a new life were heartbreaking to read about.

The Titanic Secret by James Becker

An interesting theory on the Titanic story! This is all about a conspiracy between secret service agents from the UK who were on their way to America. On board there were also German agents who were planning to head to the big apple and plot to bring down the British Goverment. The British agents either had to kill the agents before they reached their destination or a torpedo would be launched to sink the ship by a certain point of the journey. Both of these plans were thwarted by a block of ice…

Raise the Titanic by Clive Cussler

Now in reality, we all know that the Titanic was impossible to bring to the surface. But Clive had to try as in this novel there is something vital on board that certain people are keen to get their hands on. It’s an adventure thriller with the iconic ship at its core!
