Books that Champion Women
Books about Strong Women
There have been some books that have really come onto the radar for the way they champion women, often real ones from history, and give them a voice. Some to note:

Artemisia Gentileschi – a remarkable artist
Disobedient by Elizabeth Fremantle
Artemisia Gentileschi was a real Italian Baroque painter. Her achievements as an artist have been somewhat overshadowed by her painting tutor Agostino Tassi who raped her when she was a young woman – Gentileschi was even tortured to give evidence during his trial. This book gives this remarkable lady her voice back.
The First women to enter into Oxford University
This is a remarkable story about the first women allowed to study at Oxford university. Imagine! This is set in 1920s England too so not that long ago. When they do get to study there, the attitude among the male students and teachers is shocking. This book will make you mad but also give you an insight into what women had to go through and what we have today thanks to them!
The Black African American women who were crucial to the US Space Programme
Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly
This book and film made me mad but also made me cheer by the end. The abuse these women got, the racism and sheer disrespect is shocking. The story is an amazing one as these women were a crucial part of the US Space programme in the 1960s. Basically, it would not have been a success without them. These women were whizzes at maths and were remarkable in every sense of the world.

Women who got revenge on the men who had betrayed them
A Poisoner’s Tale by Cathryn Kemp
Now, this is a woman and a group of women who went around poisoning men who had done women wrong. A true life figure. I’m not condoning what she did, but when you read the story, it’s a fascinating story and you can understand where she was coming from I think. Why don’t you not see for yourself? It’s a pretty frightening thought what these women organised but wait until you read how their scheme came about…

Nelly Bly
A woman from history who was so appalled at the conditions within asylums ( not to mention the fact they existed in the first place), she got herself incarcerated into the worst one in New York to investigate it from within.
She also travelled around the world in homage to Phileas Fogg and his Around the World in 80 Days from the Jules Verne novel and so she’s fantastic n that way too.
