Crime fiction set in Norfolk
Troubled Deep – Norfolk
For crime fiction set in Norfolk, you must admit that to set a novel in the marshlands, the waterways of that region is particularly clever. There are clues and history to be found in marshlands, things get swallowed and lost in soggy earth. Add a cold case diver and you have crime fiction gold..

A novel to transport you to the Norfolk marshlands

This book caused quite the stir when it landed at BookTrail Towers. An author I knew well but a new series and a new set of characters. I knew this was going to be good from knowing his previous books but this for me, is even better.
Firstly the location is just brilliantly done. The Norfolk Broads is remote, marshy and it’s a very popular area for nature of all kinds. It’s here that we meet Cam Killick who is a former SBS diver with a dog. He suffers from PTSD, used to be in the navy and sleeps in the bath. Now there’s a lot to unpack before the story even gets started. It just gets better from then on in.
Cam Killick is one of the most fascinating characters I have read in a long while. He’s complex and troubled and finds necessary solace underwater looking for dead bodies….
The way he goes about investigating this case, searching for clues is just captivating. He’s a bit like Columbo in a way – you wouldn’t think he would find anything useful, he gets fixated on strange things but do not underestimate him! When he finds the car of a missing family but there is no one inside, that get his antenna well and truly activated.
And so starts a twisty, dark and claustrophobic read. Thank goodness for Nala the dog bringing such light and joyouse relief. Tell you what though, this is a complex and multi-layered read. Dip your toe in the water, and very soon you will be utterly submerged!
