Dr. Spilsbury and the Cursed Bride set in England
Dr. Spilsbury and the Cursed Bride – DL Douglas
Fans of true crime really need to get inside this series. This is book two to look at the famous Dr Spilsbury – he was the man made ‘ famous’ by the brides in the bath case. Basically he showed a jury how the women had died by bringing a bath and an actress into the court room. He helped solve the Dr Crippen case by looking at evidence in a new light.
What a man to focus a novel on! I AM THERE!

The second book in the series but a standalone all the same. We have a wedding in a country house, it’s the 1920s and we are about to find the bride dead. Now, there are rumours that there is a curse that strikes down anyone who marries into the family. So, could it be that this is indeed the cause of death?
Well, suffice to say, straight-talking, sensible Spilsbury doesn’t think so. He comes in to the case and wants answers but is prepared to search for them too. With his assistant Violet, he goes through the case and the evidence and looks at it in a whole new way. He wants to see what stories the pieces of evidence tell him. It was fascinating to see how he worked and analysed, how his brain ticked and how he came to the conclusions he did. I have come across Spilsbury in many true life crime books so I was fascinated to learn about how he might have been during his work. I realise that this is inspired by real life and is not a documentary but the author has some excellent research under her belt and that she is passionate about mixing fact with very realistic fiction.
In fact, I remember meeting her when book one had come out at a literary event and she was excited to learn I admired and had read about Spilsbury. We chatted all things gory and evidence based on famous crimes and I told myself then I would read anything about him she wrote. Book one was brilliant and now we have Spilsbury back again. I find this fascinating – authors who put real people in novels or who bring real people back and imagine their lives in unique ways.
Great mystery and even better to see Spilsbury come alive off the page.
