Dutch Cli Fi set in Groningen
Shocked Earth set in Groningen
A Dutch novel I thought I would read as it’s a good example of Cli fi! A classic too by all accounts.

A slow but pensive novel. This was written in 2018 so it’s not that old, but it’s considered a classic of sorts in the Netherlands from what I understand. This is a gentle novel where landscape and geography are key but where the plot is tame and slight.
The story is of a farm on the brink of change as it needs to be more modern yet older members of the family want tradition. The issues of farming in the UK at the moment seemed relevant as I read this as the livelihood of the family in the novel is under threat. Around the farm, fracking is in full swing and that forms a major part of the story. Earthquakes can be felt with the force of the fracking and this is having serious consequences on what future that farm and others face.
A quiet novel as I say but this one resonated with me. The dynamics of the family and the future of the farm was something I started to care about. The landscape of Groningen was interesting to discover.
Such a unique concept for a book – this is a story not just about the earth and our landscape but about relationships and the impact that our past can have on our present. What really shocked me was the lasting memory of how we abuse our planet written down in black and white.
