Awais Khan really is a writer you need to get on your radar right now. He has written two great books and given us some really fascinating and memorable characters. Not to mention stories that really hit home and delve into some dark corners of society. He writes about Lahore from an insider’s point of view but with outsider eyes if that makes sense and the result is something very poignant, sharp and raw.
Think gilded cage and you would know a little of what this novel is about. We are thrust into Pakistani high society -0oh just think of the wonderful clothes, colours and food! Yes, but then we have the backstabbing and the damaged egos not to mention the pressure of dealing with all that gossip. A great place to be in a book however!
if you haven’t read the first book, just know what Bilal is a violent fool who brutally abused his wife. Here we see that he’s older and less violent – I would say he’s learned a thing or two about respect or basically being normal in his old age. Still, I held my doubts throughout about him and I watched him from the corner of my eye, even when he wasn’t in the story. You just never know do you?
Life in high society seems happy but then one of the women, Mona, receives a message which could shake everything to its foundations. It could destroy her life, that of her family: everything.
Location and setting – There’s so much intrigue from the start in this book – set in Lahore, we see the gold of the golden cage/high society mixed with the undercurrent of violence and crime in the world outside this cage. There are a series of kidnappings taking place as well. The threat of violence and uncertainty is all too real…..
Remember the name Awais Khan – a writer that really gets all his emotions and observations on the page. Sharp writing that sears the eyes as you read. You might need to head to Specsavers after reading this, but it is so worth it!
