Jane Johnson and Cornwall’s White Hare

In the far west of Cornwall lies the White Valley, which cuts deeply through bluebell woods down to the sea at White Cove. The valley has a long and bloody history, laced with folklore. At its heart is a house steeped in mystery and a strange atmosphere….

In 1954, mother and daughter Magdalena and Mila acquire the house and Magda wants to set about renovating it.Mila wants this to be the save haven her daughter, Janey, needs. Janey has a vivid imagination and is often found telling stories about her plush white rabbit coming alive.

However, when Magda and Mila  discover a legend about an enchanted white hare  running through the woods, they have to wonder if the little girl can foresee things they can not. More importantly, what do they do about it?

BookTrail the locations in The White Hare

A novel to transport you deep in the heart of Cornwall and its legends

You can’t get more atmospheric than this book. Set in a crumbling old house in Cornwall, deep in the heart of the mysterious White Valley, where legends and flolklore still thrive…..my reading expecations were causing the hairs on my neck to stand on end.

There’s something very chilling about a child creating an obsession for one toy and the way Janey fixates on that rabbit and the stories she makes up is just brrrrrrrrr. She’s only five and so you have to wonder how she imagining what she does. Suffice to say things get a little supernatural and that’s what makes the book for me. – the way the author has used place and setting to fuse our natural curiosity with legends into a story with a little girl and her toy rabbit. It’s a clever mix and way of writing and I was captivated. Magda and Mila are two very well evoked characters too mind, but it’s little Janey who I won’t forget in a hurry.

Just imagine  – you renovate a house only to have your neighbours tell  you there is something wrong with it. Very wrong. Jeepers right there! The legends, landscapes and literary heritage of Cornwall leap from the page and each page helps build the thrilling bigger picture.

Jane Johnson explains in her author’s note, that the town of Eglosberyan and its valley are not real but are inspired by several real places. She brings it all very vividly to life however. You will really want to know  exactly where she researched for this. Maybe I will visit. If I see a child with a plush white rabbit however, I may just come straight back.

I am happy to say the lovely Jane is appearing on The BookTrail very soon so until then…..
