Friday reads – Bank holiday bonus
Friday is a lovely day of the week, last day at work, two days of reading ahead. Now this week is special as it’s a bank holiday so that got the book antennae twitching and we had a look through the shelves and thought now, what would we recommend reading this weekend? This Friday reads sees a bank holiday bonus and ideas for taking your mind off on a little literary jaunt.
That extra day, that lovely extra bank holiday means more reading time…and more holiday
Here’s what we recommend
Friday: THIN ICE
It’s snowing across much of England at the moment though so a perfect time to read Icelandic Noir
Bank holiday potential: A nice little journey to the Icelandic countryside
Magni and Ossi try and rob Reykjavik’s premier drugs dealer and then make a quick escape to the sun. But things take a dramatic turn and they take two hostages they wren’t expecting to and now don’t know what to do with. The police in Reykjavik are investigating the disappearance of a mother and her daughter and the death of a thief in a house fire. Could this two be linked and where are they now?
Weather forecast: Thin Ice
Your company: Two psychopaths holed up in a remote lodge with two hostages
Review of location: “The arsehole of beyond”
Would you spend a bank holiday with these people? Not that you have much choice. They choose their guests. You don’t choose them.
Saturday: Raindogs
When a journalist is found dead in the grounds of an historic castle, Sean Duffy soon realises that this is no suicide. The dead woman appears to have been working on an investigation of corruption and abuse and during the Ireland troubles of the 1980s then this is a whole other matter and a very dangerous matter to look at more closely – no matter who you are.
Weather forecast: Well it’s raining dogs so we assume cats as well
Your company: Sean Duffy is a good guy. He’s watch your back
Review of location: Belfast and Carrickfergus during the troubles. The castle is an impressive backdrop
Would you spend a bank holiday with these people? Not so much.
Sunday: A Tapping at My Door
A woman at home in Liverpool is disturbed by a persistent tapping at her back door. Cautiously she goes to investigate and find that it’s a raven and so relieved to a point, she goes to shoo it away -only this is when the unseen killer strikes. DS Nathan Cody is horrified to find at the crime scene that the victims’s eyes have been removed. And that the killer seems intent on targeting the police.
Weather forecast: Whatever the weather, don’t go out if you hear a tap at your door
Your company: DS NAthan Cody is a good guy to have on your side
Review of location: Liverpool is a nice city. Just beware of crows..
Would you spend a bank holiday with these people? Well, they tend to come and knock on your door rather than the other way around.
Monday: When She Was Bad
After all that crime and criminal goings on, time for a change. Well I say change, this book will certainly make you feel good about your work place. Even if you hate your job and really don’t want to go back in tomorrow, you’ll practically be skipping in and kissing everyone in gratitude after reading this:
This is a novel about when work becomes not just a nightmare but a living nightmare. The people you have trusted and worked with for years suddenly become backstabbing strangers. Your boss leaves and a new boss comes in and well, changes things…. and starts playing each worker off against the other…
Everyone in that office has a secret and one in particular has a secret which could blow things wide open
Come Tuesday and you’ll be looking at your colleagues in new way…
Weather forecast: Sunny and delightful at first but with the odd shower then an utter deluge of heavy, unexpected rain, clouds opening and back stabbing winds
Your company: You will recognize the attraction of being a hermit after this
Review of location: Any office in the world…
Would you spend a bank holiday with these people? Are you kidding?
Happy long weekend and happy reading!
