#Fridayreads for Friday 13th

  • Submitted: 13th January 2017

A date in the diary that many people think is unlucky. The superstition supposedly originates from the time when  on Friday, 13 October 1307, Philip IV of France arrested hundreds of the Knights Templar. Now whatever the origin of the day’s unlucky feel, it’s a good day for bookworms everywhere as if you’re superstitious then it’s best to stay in with a book and not venture out (apart from work of course)

There’s a few books in particular that are good to read today – to make you feel good about yourself or to creep you out even more!

Friday 13 reads

St Albans/Watford     Watch Me – Angela Carter

A story about Snapchat notes, suicides and threats which go viral. Now if that’s not unlucky we don’t know what is.

Manchester      Sirens

If you hear the call of the Sirens, you might call yourself as unlucky as these characters…

Australia     The Dry – Jane Harper

If you live in fictional Kiewarra in Australia, in this small, secretive community where an entire family has been slaughtered in their home – makes for a very unlucky place to live and some very suspicious people to live amongst

Books with spooky birds in the story…

Magpie Murders

They say one magpie is unlucky and that you should really see a pair – well there’s one on the cover of this book and it seems to be involved with a murder…so double unlucky in one way. Happily, the story is a good one so it’s a perfect read to stand up to Friday 13th.

The Taxidermist’s Daughter

Spooky marshland – check. Crows which appear in the dark shadows – check. A remote supersitious community? Check. Taxidermists, stuffed animals and creepy museums…triple check for a spooky read!

Folklore and magical folk…..

The Hidden People

Do you dare discover the hidden people on Friday 13th? A story of fairy folk, changelings and a great deal of superstition….

What ever you believe in. Friday is always a good day for a book! Don’t forget to watch out for the new Hannah Kent – The Good People – now that is all about superstition and traditions across the ages. Changelings, ‘the other people’ and more….Out February.
