Ghost Girl Banana set in Hong Kong and London
Sook-Yin’s daughter Lily can barely remember the mother she lost as a small child. She returns to Hong Kong to claim an inheritance and to find herself. Heritage and family secrets come at a price it would seem…
A novel of two women and a bridge which fills the cultural gap.

BookTrail Travel to Ghost Girl Banana
I have the habit of trying to work out the title of a book before I read it. A ghost girl it would seem is someone who is bi-racial but who doesn’t feel like they belong to either race. The banana aspect describes someone who is only Asian on the outside – in this novel as they have married a white Westerner. Both derogatory terms but essential to understand this novel and what it contains.
This story had two very interesting characters and three timelines. Sook-Yin is a character we follow through her rather eventful life and yes, her death. She marries a Westerner and what follows after that will cause problems in her family long after her death.
Lily is a character we meet as she travels to Hong Kong after she receives a mysterious inheritance from her mother Soon – Yin. She has different problems but her newfound wealth causes problems in their own right. Both women look for answers, direction and seek to find a clear way through the path of dual heritage and dual nationality.
The mix of settings and culture was a draw to me and it did not disappoint. The way the author merges and examines these two very distinct cultures was very well done. It’s great premise and the writing and pacing make it pop.
Recommended.
