Haunting story set in Scotland
Haunting story set in Scotland
Off to a Scottish island with a fisherman it would seem. Winter, 1900. A little boy washes up on the beach of a small fishing village in Scotland, barely alive. He bears an uncanny resemblance to teacher Dorothy’s son, lost to the sea many years before. Meanwhile, a reclusive fisherman watches on….
Ooh chilling from the start!

Oh this story nearly broke me! So emotional about a mother and a child lost to a storm. A woman who has moved to the island after the death of her mother, A woman grieving. someone who feel they don’t fit into island life. A woman stepping into the role of mother to have someone to love.
It floored me. But what a moving tale. The island setting is perfect for a slow paced, emotional read. Dorothy who is the woman in question moves to a small settlement on the island which is a fishing village. She’s the new school mistress but find it hard to fit in. She finds herself drawn to a reclusive fisherman but gossip is everywhere. Setting is everything here – mood, claustrophobia and darkness and isolation. Continuous winter feels too.
That’s not the only story of course as the central thread is about loss and the loss of a child, the rescue of a child and the parallels between them. This is so moving and nicely done. But have your hankies to hand!
