Historical novel set in Corfu
The Greek House – Dinah Jefferies
Dinah Jefferies has written some of the most atmospheric books ever. They have been set in far flung places such as Asia and Ceylon. Strong stories that really shine and characters I honestly feel are still with me.
Now, off to Corfu with the latest book The Greek House….

I love Dinah Jefferies’ books. They are all sumptuous Cinderella slippers that you know are going to be gorgeous but let you step into a world you would never normally see otherwise. There is pain and your heart aches by the end of the night, but you have been in a literally whirl.
Corfu in the 1920 and 1930s is a very unique setting for the novel. The Italians have decided to invade and occupy Corfu and life changes for ever. There’s the disappearance of a young boy and this starts off the story of a family left bereft in his wake. You can only imagine how life has changed so much and become so unstable for this family. Not surprisingly they split and the mum and the boy’s sister, Thirza, move to England.
Many years later, Thirza returns to Corfu – and to the old family home. Well, this is when things get very interesting. Oh there is so much to love about this part of the story – there is so much drama and intrigue as Thirza tries to find answers, settle back to a place she left in sadness, and find herself again. Oh how I felt for her at this point. She is very strong but I wanted to jump into the book and hold her hand. Honestly, remember to breathe at some point as there is just one shock and heart-breaking twist after another.
The story and setting married each other perfectly. This is a very strong and rich book with hidden truths around a gorgeous Corfu beach home.
No spoilers here but be assured that you will be utterly transported to Corfu and to a whole other world that Dinah serves like the perfect literary feast.
