A novel to transport you around the Arctic and via deathly locations in London!

Maude’s sister Constance disguises herself as a boy and joins a ship going to the Arctic as part of Sir John Franklin’s expedition. This sounded very exciting to me! This part of the novel in particular just jumped off the page with its vivid descriptions and I loved it!

However, when Maude gets a letter saying that her sister has died during the expedition, she wants to find out more. Horrified at the lack of information and being so far away from her sister, she is compelled to find out what really happened.

I loved that about Maude – putting herself in danger at a time when women had to stay in their lane – despite the danger to herself. She gets to know the person who might be responsible for her sister’s death and so becomes involved with his travel company. Now, this is where things got very interesting. The man gave tours of public hangings and this was a very popular thing at the time. It’s shocking to think this really happened and that they were popular! This level of scene setting was hard to read but fascinating. Glad to be there via a book and not in real life however!

One of the places I really found interesting to visit – two really, were those in London. Newgate Prison and Madame Tussauds play a very important role in the story. And to think this was based on real life! The author has really done some clever research here.

Back to the Arctic however and to follow Constance and her efforts to join an expedition like the one she did, was superbly done. Glad she wrote such a detailed diary as I was swept along for the ride. I was totally immersed in this part of the story for the intrigue and what an expedition would have entailed back then.

Constance and Maude together weave some fascinating threads to form a story that just gets better and better. Lizzie Pook is fast becoming a go- to author for me. What am I on about? With this second book, she is definitely there.
