A novel to transport you to Provence
Map of locations in The Artist
If ever there was a book where I feel the artist in question is the author, who has taken a paintbrush instead of a pen or computer to write this book, then this is it. It is quite the work of art in itself.
The setting is just divine and showcases the plot to perfection. It could only be set in a farmhouse in Provence, France couldn’t it? You can imagine the sun on the sandy cobbles, the dust on the roads, smell the flowers and feel the wind on your face. It’s so immersive and summery.
I loved the premise of Joseph, a journalist heading to interview a reclusive artist. He meets the artist’s niece, Ettie, and sparks fly as well as mysterious vibes and an underlying tension of something….
Joseph and Ettie are wonderful characters and the allure of the mysterious artist is just spellbinding. But the mysterious Tartuffe is just something else. Mysterious, aloof, a master of light, grumpy and just very strange.
There is so much to love about this book. Honestly, a work of art where you can see and taste the decay, the fear, the emotions in the novel as the characters add their own brushstrokes to the final painting.
Step back when you’ve finished as it’s a very special sight.
