A novel to transport you to to the USA

A unique story of the immigrant experience. A Chinese family moves to the USA and we follow an engineer who is working well below his level of education, his daughter who struggles with what her father expects of her and a lawyer. You might not think that their stories would merge or their lives would link up in some way. But they do and….oh that chapter!
I have read stories of immigrant experiences before but this felt very fresh and new. The story was written in a very unique way – multiple timelines out of synch with various POVs switching around too. Now, if you think this might get confusing, it doesn’t. This gives you an excellent insight into how different people see one event or remember one event across time.
This story is very quiet and takes time over a long time – this is a human story, of people and those moving from one country to another. Parents fighting for their child. It must be quite a thing to move countries, cultures and languages with your family and I thought Tony the father’s story was particularly moving.
Paper Names is a very interesting, contemplative read. The title means something to me now and I wanted to give the book a hug after reading. I will definitely read the next Susie Luo.
