I loved the premise of this. A taxi driver travels in his cab around the city picking up passengers and stories. The stories are all interlinked and read very well, In fact I would say they flow well like a nice gentle taxi ride. I could imagine the lights and the quiet streets and the gentle muffled noise of everything as I went past.
I sometimes struggle with short stories but these flowed nicely and one blended into another so that they felt like more of a story, an observation of the city as it sleeps. There was a great cast of characters and I felt I was sitting with my head out of the window with the wind in my face and stop at the lights where a character would be standing.
It reads as whimsical but insightful too. There’s not much of a story overall if you like, but there is a series of stories, a night-time lullaby. the fact it was set at night really worked well as that’s the time when all your thoughts and dreams come to the surface isn’t it.
Goodnight Tokyo, I will miss you!
