Richard and Judy Autumn Reads

  • Submitted: 27th September 2016

When do you know it’s really autumn? Leaves on the pavement, the need for a roaring fire and a nice cup of hot chocolate or a Richard and Judy Autumn read? Well all of the above if we’re honest, but the Richard and Judy book club really nails Autumn for us.

Some cracking reads on this season’s line up:

Richard and Judy

So which books are Richard and Judy recommending. They’ve already taken a look at Orphan X and The Widow so why not join them? Like a book club with the book club King and Queen in your living room. Hope they both like hot chocolate with sprinkles on it. I also love having to wear gloves and scarf when I go outside. Then it’s the perfect excuse to come back in doors, warm up and read beside the fire. Except I seem to have mislaid my scarf somewhere…..

The Widow

The book club opened with The Widow. Not really a booktrail book since much of the action takes place in one house and inside her mind, but it’s that of a unique premise that I had just had to read it. Sometimes a book does that and this one did not disappoint.

I was a bit nervous before I picked this book up to be honest. There is just something really creepy about lilies. Can’t stand them in real life since I have never been able to forget the day I reported a gas leak in France only to discover it was a bunch of lillies. Maybe they smell different over there but you can’t deny they have a unique odeur!

The novel was almost a closed room as it was very claustrophobic and I did admit to feeling very uncomfortable with the subject matter of a missing child and suspected child abuse. So if the subject didn’t exactly appeal, what did was the way Fiona described the world of journalism and the paper’s wish to get the best story and the money shot as it were. The world of what we read and what actually happens, from the point of view of someone at the centre of it all…

Orphan X

Take the book under the spotlight now – Orphan X, and one of the funniest but very apt review I’d ever read from Richard himself:

“You like your stories gritty? They don’t come much grittier than this. Take Jason Bourne and Jack Reacher, put them in a blender, add three drops of neat sulphuric acid and two of nitro-glycerine, switch it on and don’t be surprised if the lid blows off. Congratulations – you’ve just mixed your first Orphan X.”

I loved the premise of having to dial the hotline: 1-855-2Nowhere. Now that got my attention. Pretty fast and furious this one.

Clare

In future weeks, as each title is reviewed and highlighted in WHSmith stores, we’ll be featuring the latest content and a few Richard and Judy gems along the way. These two need a new sofa and fast!

PS Richard I need my scarf back
