Sister Europe – Nell Zink

An irresistible and poignant novel about the upper echelons of Berlin society you say? Don your best frock or dining suit and let’s open the doors and introduce ourselves shall we?

Naema who is hosting this party is currently stuck in Montreux – it’s an exclusive gala dinner in Berlin to honour the author Masud al-Huzeil for his lifetime achievement in Arabic literature. There’s been a bit of trouble with sending out the invites and getting replies so Masud poor soul is tasked with getting some guests onboard. Friend Demian invites Livia and Toto – two friends who will do anything for a free meal. What’s more, Toto, an American publisher has a very young internet date who comes with him, and his 15 year old daughter.

Oh this is going to be a dinner to remember!

A novel to transport you to Berlin

A short novel that says a lot in a few pages. There’s something very clever about that. Don’t go looking for a plot as such – this is a novel of observation. I was quite excited to be placed so centrally in Berlin’s high society to be honest and eat all that food – that was quite the party!

There are some really fun characters in this novel – quirky is not the word. Some work in the publishing industry and there are also princes and all manner of sophisticated people. Except that’s the thing – money and wealth does not sophistication make. And that, ladies and gentleman, is the party you really should look forward to attending.

There are some humdinger moments in this book and it’s a car crash of a party. You would so want to be sitting at the next table if this was in real life. No spoilers but I laughed, cried out in shock, held my hands over my eyes, face palmed and every other emotion in between.

I really liked how for such a closed room novel as it were, the city of Berlin and the history of Germany really does weave through the plot and what goes on. History influences everything and that reveals itself in surprising ways.

Short but packs a punch!
