A novel to transport you to a Kent commune/sect

A novel about a cult is always interesting. They always bring intrigue, danger and something altogether disturbing. Here we have a woman who has been in such a cult and is now looking back on the part she played in it. A crime took place and now, it’s time for her to work through it and see what and how she got involved.
The story centres around Iris who has moved back home with her mother. She meets Hazel who lives on some sort of commune in Kent and this appeals to Iris. She imagines it as a place of comfort, community and a new start after her broken relationship which caused her to return home in the first place. This appeals so much to Iris that she does all she can to get herself a place there. The phrase ‘ Be careful what you wish for’ has never been more apt.
As Iris becomes even more involved with the commune, it all changes. The mood of the book, the atmosphere become sharper and dangerous. The sense of foreboding ramps up slowly and it makes for a very eerie read. Even the name – Breach House – sounds sinister (wait until the name starts to earn its keep). The house/commune and those within start to mould as one. Death and destruction invade every orifice, danger flies in and the rot starts to take hold. This was a very raw and visceral reading experience – that house got to me! That is the sign of good writing and great scene setting.

By the time the men arrive at the commune, I felt as if I was on a precipice myself. This book makes you think about yourself, who and what you are, what makes a home and community, what binds us and what we need as human basics.
Why do people join cults in the first place? Now this book raises so many questions and they would be great for a book club to get its teeth into.
