Sunday Funday at Newcastle Noir
This weekend sees a bunch of criminally good writers heading up to Newcastle to talk crime fiction. TAking place in the very nice library that is the Lit and Phil, there’s more than a few highlights to share and to watch out for:
Otherwordly – 10am
Books set in Urban mean streets and bleak rural landscapes – this panel examines when crime fiction goes even further and examines the most chilling of crime-fiction settings.
Space – Chris Brookmyre
Berlin Wall – Anthony Johnston
Creepy gothic house in Glasgow – Michael Malone
A man haunted by the ghosts of the 12 people he has slaughtered – Stuart Neville
At 11.30, I’m chatting to authors HOT OF THE PRESS (I’m very excited I can’t tell you how much!)
Sweden and London: Johana Gustawsson talks all things Scandi Noir, setting her books across borders and mixing Swedish, Spanish and English heritage
Edinburgh – an alternative Edinburgh – Doug Johnstone is your man
London – The inside of a marriage on the edge – Louise Voss
MasalaNoir – how I love that title! – talking multiracial London and Indian set fiction
Mumbai – Vaseem Khan writes novels based around the Mumbai Baby Ganesh Detective Agency. (Can’t promise any elephants will make an appearance at Newcastle Noir)
History of India – Abir Mukherjee writes novels firmly embedded in the history and culture of India
Multiracial London – Alex Caan‘s Detective Sergeant Zain Harris is the poster boy for multiracial policing
GRIP LIT
Scotland – Alison Baillie’s Sewing the Shadows was set in Edinburgh and A Fractured Winter is just out, set in the Swiss mountains….
Peterborough – It’s the social settings which are of note with Eva Dolan – Transgender issues, immigration and hate crime for example…
Manchester and Myanmar – Rachel Abbott puts the chill in chiller..
When stars collide..2-30pm
Mark Billingham and Val McDermid plot and plan
London – Mark writes the Tom Thorne novels set in London and has also appeared on a very thrilling episode of The Chase – where he killed his opponents including Joey Essex, but not in the way as his novels would suggest
Bradfield – Val is so criminally minded, she had to invent a city all of her own. Somewhere between Bradford and Sheffield but would you go here, even if Robson Green might be there?
ABBA might be returning but….
They’ve got nothing on the Fun Lovin Criminals!
Mark Billingham, Stuart Neville, Doug Johnstone, Val McDermid, Luca Veste and Chris Brookmyre murder some well loved tunes (their words not mine!)
