The charms of fiction
The charms of fiction – there’s a lot that’s charming about books and so the fact that we’re on the blog tour for The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper has made me think of what book related items I would have on a charm bracelet of my own.
There were a few things that I considered before narrowing it down to five. A pint of Beer to make me think of Rebus from the Ian Rankin novels, A hat or wand to represnt Harry Potter and a sailing boat to remind me of Lucy Clarke’s novel The Blue but these novels are dark in places so I wanted to choose charms which looked at the more charming side of literary life. So, I picked the following after a lot of thinking and even more biscuits.

An Elephant Charm

Oh I would have to have an elephant charm to remind me of baby Ganesh every time I looked at it. I loved this novel about a soon to retire Police Inspector in Mumbai and inherits a baby elephant on his last day at work. It;s a lot of fun but a serious crime novel as well so there ‘s a lot to it and a lot of charm to be immersed in Mumbai for a while
A Fairy charm

Who can forget the charming book of Fairytales which appears in Kate Morton’s equally charming book of a young girl who finds a garden and fills your reading world with some of the most wonderful stories that we wish was an actual book in itself and not just in Kate Morton’s imagination. I would have a fairy charm to remind me of how this book made me feel then and now.
Shoes or a letter

As seen in Harold Fry’s story of his pilgrimage as he walks from Devon to Berwick to see his long lost Queenie. I would have a letter charm to remind me of this lovely sweet story that kept me feeling good about the world for a long time after reading it. Thank you Harold and thank you Queenie for a poignant moment or two
An octopus

As seen in the Watchmaker of Filigree street. I really enjoyed this novel and as well as wanting an old pocket watch as well, I would love an octopus charm to remind me of the Clockwork octopus that appears in the story. The Creatures of the Watchmaker’s world just captivated me and I really wanted to see them for real and not just in mu imaginiation. Having a charm would make me smile like I did when I met this charming creature in the novel.
The Miniaturist and Peebo

The Miniaturist just lends itself to a charm really and so I would have one of the girl on the front cover – any one of the characters from the book to represent the miniaturist herself and the world of small things. Maybe I would have one of an old Canal side home in Amsterdam? Think of the endless possibilities?
So there you have it. My ideal literary inspired Charm bracelet inspired by Arthur Pepper himself. This one he sent to me personally would have to have my main charm however:
