Ooh if you are anything like me and will never climb a mountain in real life, this is THE book for you..
You get to climb Kilimanjaro and really get involved with the others in your party. There’s a great sense of community, you get to know what’s involved, how hard it is, how many base camps there are etc.
Oh and there’s murder too…just as well it’s in a book eh?

I love adventure. I love trekking and walking, booktrailing of course and general wandering and ging up a mountain sounds amazing. Lucky then that Karen Hamilton let me go up Kilimanjaro in her latest novel The Contest. Tell you what, this is some adventure. I felt the fear and suffered a little from altitude sickness when reading this. Very realistic. Reember to have snacks to hand when reading just incase you feel dizzy 😉

This was a twisty nove. A real thriller with confusion and claustrophobia the main characters. The entire setting was just so well done. An eccentric boss sets a challenge for his team to climb THE mountain. Kilimanjaro. They are split into two groups ad well, the challenge of the climb is the least of their worries. The ultimate prize is a top job a the company but, well, let’s just say that will probably be a poisoned chalice.
Florence is going with one party. She is there for reasons of her own and as for Jacob – well, his father is the big boss so he has reasons to want to do this too. What about this big boss? HE was an interesting character. Not sure I would want to work for him but a great man to have in a novel like this.

The descriptions of the climb are horrifically accurate I imagine. I honestly felt dizzy at times as I could see everything, feel the lack of air, hear people opening backpacks. All so realistic. The banter between the climbers was neatly done but it was the infighting that really got to me. This climb is a fight to the death – literarlly! Someone of course dies and then all bets are off. It’s a twisty twisty thing. The pacing was very much like a good climb with time at the end to stop and appreciate all that had gone on before. Cue Evil laugh.
