A novel to transport you  to a remote Greek island

I’m not sure I would go anywhere with Alex Michaelides after reading his novels set in you would expect ‘ safe’ academia and a  therapists room. Certainly not a Greek island cut off from the outside world which is what you get in The FURY.

The island in the novel Aura is fictional but it’s firmly set in the Cyclades so you can go there and imagine you are trapped on Aura. The FURY  island setting is just lovely – very Agatha Christie too with people being invited to the island by , in this case, a famous actress. Then there is a death, someone is stalking animals and things just seem ‘off’ This part is nicely set up. Predictable in some ways but that just makes way for what is to come.

The atmosphere in The FURY was strong -the island could have been anywhere really but the winds, the remoteness of it all were very well done. Winds were called ‘menos’ in the book and this means  ‘fury’ in Greek I believe as they come from nowhere and unleash their rapid energy on a place.

For a thriller, this is quite slow so it’s a slow burn mystery I feel more than anything. This is Elliot’s story to tell and as he’s an actor, he does all this in five acts. Time to get a bit of popcorn and go to the loo in between acts I feel. But by the time you come back, you will want to get back on that island.

Have to give a round of applause for the appearance of some of the characters from earlier books. The cover – in the US at least – has an evil eye on the front. Very apt.

Yup, I enjoyed this.
