BookTrail Travel to The Good Liars
Anita Frank is a very fine author indeed. The Lost Ones will remain one of my favourite novels set in a gothic house. I also loved The Return, so I was more than excited to see The Good Liars fly onto my radar.
This was such a treat! It was the literary equivalent of a chocolate box and has a little bit of everthing but there is no list of chocolates so you never know what you are getting and the element of surprise is always there.
The setting was oh just perfect. The mysterious Darkacre Hall – what a name! A troubled family the end of the war, a river and woods nearby, something stirring…
I was chillingly enthralled throughout. The pacing, writing and characters were just all spot on They had complex backstories that forned the main story and it was seamlessly written so that I really felt I knew thiese people. Some very moving scenes in this book. The effects of war and return from war are all too apparent and I can’t imagine what it must have been like to have been in the trenches and then returning to normal life. I honestly wanted to hug some of them. This is a very claustrophobic world and I was reminded of Wilkie Collins in many ways for the feelings it stirred in me, the style of writing and the otherwordly settings. I got vibes of An Inspector Calls to for the style and plotting. I mean that is a good pedigree right?
As well as dark moments, there are plenty of light and fun ones too. There’s a talking parrot for example! Oh and one line in particular about an eiderdiown made me chuckle again a few pages after reading it.
I tucked into this chocolate box of a novel with glee and I ate up each and every one of them. A great mix of ingredients seamlessly blended and with a whip on top.
The Good Liars is a book I would highly recommend. I am in love witht that cover!
