The Only One Left set in Maine
If Riley Sager was a travel agent, you wouldn’t want to go to any of the places he takes you to haha. Well, not with the people or in the circumstances he takes you to that’s for sure. In The Last One left, we’re off to the cliffs of Maine. Beautiful in many ways, creepily gothic in many more. We’re off to take care of the owner who needs constant looking after. Hard work but quiet and away from everything. Everything you’ve ever known or are likely to see again that is.

BookTrail Travel to The Only One Left
At seventeen, Lenora Hope
Hung her sister with a rope
Stabbed her father with a knife
Took her mother’s happy life
“It wasn’t me,” Lenora said
But she’s the only one not dead
Now when a novel is introduced with words like that, I immediately want to read it. It reminded me of the real life case of Lizzie Borden – Lizzie Borden took an axe and gave her mother forty whacks. When she saw what she had done, she gave her father forty-one. That was me HOOKED.
The setting for starters – on the cliffs of Maine in a spooky gothic mansion. A sole woman has lived there ever since the year the massacre of her family happened. Mute and alone. Survivor or killer? Now, in 1983, she communicates that she is ready to tell the story. Enter Kit. Prepare to meet Leonora who types on what she wants to say with one finger on an old typewriter.
Oh my. Imagine going to an old person’s house and finding out that this little old lady in a wheelchair could know a lot more about her family’s murders than she is letting on. What a premise and what a thrilling way to find out – in the hands of Mr Sager! An evil genius. An evil, twisted and darkly minded genius.

As well as keeping my eyes and ears on the characters, I was mindful of the house itself. Perched on the cliffs, rocks and the wild sea below, it mirrors the events in the house very well indeed. Sliding towards the abyss…… The tension and intrigue throughout was a deliciously creepy JOY to experience. Riley, I might never want to go on holiday with you but your literary travels are brilliant!
Imagine growing up with a fhyme about a family massacre and then meet the only survivor? The women you have sang about for years in the playground is now who you are working for!!
What on earth is she going to tell you? What will you do next? How are earth are you going to get out of there…ARE you going to get out of there?
Creepy, Sagerishly suspenseful and a damn good thriller with a kick ass ending. Read it.
