The People’s City of Edinburgh – A BookTrailer’s guide!

  • Submitted: 15th February 2022

The People’s City of Edinburgh

I was very happy to come across this book recently. A book, no an ode to the city of Edinburgh. A collection of stories written by the likes of Ian Rankin and  Alexander Mc Call Smith, this takes you around the city past and present. Oh the places you see through some very unique eyes, people who either live in the city or set their books there. People with a love of the Scottish capital and all its literary heritage. Quite a book….

BookTrail the locations in The People’s City

What a lovely book! Five writes with links and a love of the city come together to guide you around using their memories, tips and local knowledge to showcase the city in numerous ways. The city is full of iconic sites, but it’s the ones such as  the street corners, the favourite bakery and the view that you don’t see as  a tourist that really shines.

The book cover captures the iconic Calton Hill which overlooks the city of Edinburgh and this is so apt. The book is an overview, a bird’s eye view if the city and you really should take a look. I would like to read this sat on Calton Hill itself as I imagine that would be really special but given that it’s normally very windy there, I read this from a warm coffee shop instead.

Five authors have taken time to find stories, a corner of the city, a memory of Edinburgh’s past to show you a new and nuanced angle of the tourist hotspot. The city is steeped in literary heritage and the authors in the book have set their own books there which really makes this special. You can booktrail with this book as well as all of theirs! Go in August and see the book festival and visit the  Writer’s Musuem. I’m always in awe when I come out of the train station and see the biggest literary monument there is – Walter Scott Monument is practically the gateway to the city and all if represents.

You will need good shoes to booktrail this book as there are many places highlighted within. There is a very fine bakery as well though so your reward, as well as a personal guide to the city, is an Italian cake or two. I liked the fact that Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh wrote an introduction and that Irvine Welsh himself writes a piece in the beginning.

A true celebration and unique view of a remarkable city!
