TheBookTrail roundup of Travels via books in July

  • Submitted: 1st August 2019

July was hot for books set in unique locations!

Feeling tired? You should be if you’ve read any of the following books. Their destinations were varied and far away but it’s the journey they took us on that were the most memorable and brilliant exhausting!

The weather has been hot and cold in equal measure. You never can predict the seasons now – but with this selection of books, your reading will always be hot – and suitable to curl up with on a rainy day…

A stay in a plus New York apartment

Lock Every Door – Riley Sager

This was perhaps one of the most thrilling novels that caused my heart rate to rise and fall like nothing else. The location was New York and most of the book takes place in a plush (and fictional) apartment block. A bit like a locked room mystery of sorts even though the characters do venture out a little bit. It’s exciting to be in the city that never sleeps, in an apartment block like the iconic Dakota. The apartment is yours for a trial run – you get to live there rent free and with a nice little earner at the end for you. If you get out alive that is….

Lake District horrors – and a title to perfectly sum up UK weather this summer!

Black Summer by M W Craven

If you haven’t read any M W Craven books – do the right thing and head to a bookstore right now. Totally worth it. The Puppet Show was chilling but this has ramped up that chill and more. You are literally buried into the heart and soul of the Lake District landscape here and it’s dark, damp and unforgiving. Just what you want in a crime novel!

A holiday in a French villa?

The Holiday by T M Logan

OMG. This was a REAL treat! For someone who has stayed in a villa with friends and other couples, I was dying to return to France and spend time in this villa. What was going to happen between the holiday makers? There can be squabbles and silly spats when many different personalities can come to blows. But then this is a holiday so, everyone is happy yes? They just want to enjoy themselves, yes? Well, wait until you see who is on holiday here and what happens when the holiday really starts….

Spanish trail of wartime secrets

The Spanish Promise Karen Swan

A treat from Karen Swan. Always a go-to author for locations, but this time the story was more about the journey than the destination. A sunny read judging by the cover. Peel back the layers however and this is a complex tale of family loyalty and war time intrigue.

The busiest book ever!

Rush around New York State – your child’s life depends upon it.

The Chain by Adrian McKinty

Are you the kind of person who likes to sit  on the beach on holiday and read? Or are you the kind who likes to rush around seeing everything you can? This book suits both as it’s the perfect book to sit down with and rest as the book is so busy of people rushing around in a desperate bid to save their child. It’s also the busiest book to showcase the area of Plum Island in New York and all it has to offer.

What a whirl wind July was! So many exciting books to read over the summer and beyond. What a mix of destinations and journeys! I’m exhausted but in a very good way. Nothing like an exciting book to get your heart going and your reading senses heightened!

Bring on August!
