Thriller set in Hastings and London – The Closer I Get – Paul Burston
A psychological, social-media thriller by Paul Burston
Paul Burston -The Closer I Get – a novel for the social media and digital media age. One which may well make you delete twitter immediately after reading. It’s that compelling and believable.
Set in the world of books and authors. In the novel, Tom is a successful writer but he is struggling to finish his novel. He has the distractions most writers have such as social media. One major distraction however is an online admirer named Evie. She’s his number one fan. So keen to be noticed by him, she won’t leave him alone. In Evie’s world, this communication with her favourite author is all she has. The one thing she wants in her life, is him. So she’s not happy when Tom gets a restraining order. He’s at the end of his tether. She’s just at the beginning of her downward spiral.
However Tom needs social media, it feeds his interest. He’s just as addicted as Evie. And never the two addictions shall meet…

Paul Burston – (sound of applause)
That’s me clapping. Haha what a twisty, twisted sick ride that was! Utterly captivating and a ride deep into the land of paranoia. The book might be set in Hastings and London but the real location here is the world of social media, the fears and thoughts of the human mind…..
There’s really not much I can say about this novel as it’s one you have to read and discover for yourself.
You have to go into this novel blind – discover the slippery slope that the characters do without any forewarning or idea of what to expect. Having said that, even if you know something, you’re soon going to be proven wrong and your neck twisted in ways you would never have expected.
There’s two characters but the story line reads like a cast of thoughts, fears, emotions, twists and paranoia. Predator and prey. The hunter and the hunted…
I can honestly say my mind was blown and my heart beat was a lot faster than normal. I had to finish it and read late into the night, the tiredness adding to the fear, but keeping me awake at the same time. This novel is the equivalent of someone tapping you on your left shoulder from behind, you jump but laugh and turn to your right only to be slapped in the face.
Characters and snappy dialogue make this book. Add to that a gripping and well paced plot and you have Psychological gold.
I think it should come with a blood pressure test just to see the difference before and after.
