Thriller set in rural China – Ice City by Brian Klingborg

Ice City by Brian Klingborg

If this is not one of the most fascinating locations I’ve come across in a book then I don’t know what is. I was transported to a small valley town in remote and rural China, high up in the mountains and not far from Harbin City which is known as the City of Ice. The town is Raven Valley and is famous or should that be infamous for its winters. This is nowhere to live really but rather to survive.

Travel all the way to rural China

Inspector Lu Fei is the Deputy Chief of the local police station which takes care of public security. They are onlya small force of course but they have just found a case which will take all of their strength Lu Fei is a  rare breed in that he seems to be the only man with principle and feeling.. They have found the body of a woman, killed with hell money stuffed in her mouth and with her missing vital organs. Such horrors suggest that she may have been killed for her organs so the police start their investigations there. Another level of policing then takes part and there’s friction between Fei and his colleague Song, from this new team. There’s a tough investigation ahead and it’s never going to be plain sailing.

The nature of the investigation and the ways the Chinese police do things was fascinating to read bout. Rural villages everywhere have limited resources and time and so again, things are different here. The author has crafted a tale with lots of cultural references and names of Chinese figures from history which makes it very interesting to read when you get this level of context in the story. I found them useful and you didn’t realise you were picking up information most of the time.

This is a thriller with a difference due to setting and culture and I will definitely be looking out for the next from this author.
