A Spanish thriller not long out in Spain but I have been hearing SUCH good things about this that I had to read it.

I’ve never read this author before – it’s book four into a series so I have three in the back catalogue which is always good when you find an established author!

A novel to transport you to the mines of the Basque country

One of the cleverest novels in terms of setting and plot – The novel takes place in the Vizcaya/Biscay region of the Basque country. Now, this region, particularly around the Bilbao region is well known for its mining. This author has taken that, created a murder mystery and an intriguing storyline involving corruption and money and gives us a crime mystery with a very unique landscape that is a character in itself.

It’s so much more than a crime drama. Very multi-layered and complex. I do think I would have appreciated it even more had I read the earlier books. Having said, I have those to look forward to!

The location in particular was very cleverly evoked. The history and heritage are carefully woven into the plot giving a real sense of you being there. I learned a lot about mining, the nature of the land, the consequences for those living nearby and much more. A real eye opener! The various locations mingled with legends and legacy were very impressive.

I think this would be a real find for a wider readership – don’t see these as translated anywhere? – Can’t wait to read the rest!
