Thriller set on a Nepal mountain

  • Submitted: 7th February 2022

Amy McCulloch takes you mountain climbing

The world of competitive sport and outdoor activity is not one I am familiar with, so for a thriller, to go right into the world of mountain climbing, this was fairly new territory for me. I´ve been up mountains with Ruth Ware to a ski lodge and with Ali Shiver for a skiing experience, but never in the world of professional climbing like this one.

What a novel this was! I was firmly in the shoes of main character Cecily Wong, as she headed to the mountain in Nepal to interview a famous climber and climb the mountain herself. I strapped on my boots and headed on out. Despite the fact I had even less experience than her, I was caught up in this from the off.

Cecily is a journalist who has been on a climb before. This time she is chasing a story about the famous Charles McVeigh as he tackles the last summit in his challenge of being the person to climb the 14 mountains in the world with the highest peaks. He is to do this with no oxygen and in a year. The author herself climbed this mountain and it shows. The attention to detail, the trials and tribulations of climbing, the worries, the tricks and tips are all there and they wonderfully create a very believable world of tension, power trips and how to climb a monster of a mountain.

It´s very thrilling and tense right the way through. I  have never had the desire to even try and climb something like this, but even I could feel the need to keep p the pace with the others, one step infront of the other, to watch out for fellow climbers and to never look down. I liked the fact how this climb was relevant to the one Cecily had done before. There are people in that group who are very competitive and would one of them kill to be the best?

Such a good locked room style mystery as well, you cant get more locked in and claustrophobic than this! By the time she finds the first body, my pulse was up and racing. The adrenaline of the character seeps through to the reader.

I really feel as if I know something about the word of climbing now  – or at least I get the excitement, the perseverance and the inbuilt desire to climb no matter what. It was a thrill to be part of that world. I am physically exhausted because of it.

I need to take off my boots and have a sit down. Maybe a cup of tea with a wee dram of something stronger. This mountain of a book has floored me but it was totally worth it.
